Types of Pregnancy Tests Available in Ireland

All at home pregnancy tests are urine based but with the wide range of types of pregnancy tests out there it is not surprising that when many women end up at the pharmacy, they often do not know which is the ‘right’ kind of test. The answer depends on several factors, such as how quickly after conception you wish to take the test, which format you are most comfortable with and how much you want to pay. In Ireland, people either purchase pregnancy tests in the pharmacy where branded pregnancy tests can be found, supermarkets such as Tesco where branded and even supermarket branded pregnancy tests can be found and online where all types of pregnancy tests can be found. Online shops in Ireland have become an extremely popular way to find pregnancy tests among couples trying to conceive (who can go through quite a few tests!).

Not only can you find the top brands for less online, you can also save substantial amounts by purchasing generic brand tests that are normally used by healthcare professionals but can still be used at home. In general, there are three different types of pregnancy tests: midstream (most branded pregnancy tests are in this format), pregnancy test cassettes and pregnancy test strips. The sensitivity can vary between each type of pregnancy test and therefore how early after a missed period the test can be used will vary. There is a description of each type of test below, which may help in choosing which pregnancy test is right for you.

Midstream Pregnancy Tests

Almost all branded pregnancy tests in Ireland are in midstream format e.g. Clearblue & First Response. The word midstream is derived from the way the sample is collected – midstream! In this format, the sample is collected by urinating directly on the top of the stick. Midstream pregnancy tests are normally the least sensitive of all the tests but the First Response brand while expensive is very sensitive and can be used as early as 6 days before your period is due. People choose these tests for their ease of sample collection or because they simply trust the brand names, they go by.

Pregnancy Test Cassettes

pregnancy test cassettes

Pregnancy Test Cassettes are not commonly found in Irish pharmacies or supermarkets. They are the preferred choice by healthcare professionals who use a point of care pregnancy test as an initial screen or a prequel to conducting a blood test. This is because the sample collection is separated from the test itself, which gives more control in terms of conducting the test. A urine sample is collected first using a urine collection cup. A pipette is used to take a small amount of urine. The pregnancy test cassette is laid on a flat surface and the pipette is squeezed to allow a few drops to activate the strip on the cassette (see image below). Most pregnancy test cassettes are early pregnancy tests, which apart from being cheaper is why this format is popular among women who shop online. Early pregnancy test cassettes can be twice as sensitive as the top brands and testing is possible between six and fifteen days after fertilisation of the egg.
