The Sensitivity of Pregnancy Tests
Different pregnancy tests have different levels of sensitivity. The sensitivity in the vast majority of pregnancy tests is the following: 6.3mlU, 10mIU, 25mlU, & 50mlU. The sensitivity of a pregnancy test refers to the amount of the hormone that has to be present in order for the test to indicate positive. The ultra early pregnancy tests only require a very small amount of hCG to be present in order to indicate a positive result. For example, the First Response pregnancy test only requires 6.3mlU of hCG or above in order to indicate a positive result. The generic ultra early pregnancy test requires 10mIU of hCG or above in order to indicate a positive result.
This compares with pregnancy test cassettes, which have a sensitivity of 25mlU of hCG or above before they will show a positive result. A Clearblue pregnancy tests requires that 50mlU of hCG or above is present before it will show a positive result.

Doctor vs. at home pregnancy testing in Ireland
At home pregnancy tests are easy to get (you can even buy them online!) and can be taken in the privacy of your own home at any time. However, when in doubt you should head to the doctor’s office for confirmation. A hCG blood test can prove definitively whether you are pregnant, so once you have used your home pregnancy test it is time to make an appointment. You should always get confirmation from a doctor before you make any changes (or tell your family!).
In the end, it is up to you to decide which type of pregnancy test is right for you. Home pregnancy tests are simple and affordable, the test only takes a few minutes and you can get specialised tests for early detection. A blood test done by your doctor can detect a pregnancy a few days earlier than a urine test, but the results may take a few days.
Where to Buy Pregnancy Tests in Ireland
If you are planning to become pregnant, or think you may be pregnant, it is a good idea to have a pregnancy test on hand. However, where should you buy your pregnancy test? That depends on a few factors: how fast you want the test in hand, and how much you want to pay for it.
Pharmacy / Supermarket
Your local pharmacy or Supermarket will likely have a reasonable selection of home pregnancy tests in stock. The larger the store, the larger the selection of tests they will have in stock. If you have a small store on the corner you will probably find that they have at least one test on hand, although you’ll pay quite a bit more for it than if you go to a pharmacy, supermarket or online .
If you need a pregnancy test immediately, as in you cannot wait another single day to find out then picking a test up at a pharmacy or supermarket is a good choice.
Online Stores in Ireland
A wide variety of online stores are now offering pregnancy tests. With little or no overheads, these online stores offer much more affordable prices than those with physical stores. Many stores will give you the option of overnight delivery in Ireland via courier or An post.
Additionally, most online stores can offer you significant discounts if you wish to purchase bulk packages of 5, 10, 20 or 40 or more home pregnancy tests. This is a terrific way to save, especially if you are trying to get pregnant, and feel like it would take a few tries. Alternatively, if you have a friend who is also planning on trying to get pregnant, you can split the cost and save even more.
Buying home pregnancy tests online can save you money, and is a good idea if you are going to need more than one, or are expecting to need to take a test again in a few days. So you have time to receive the test in the mail. Most online stores in Ireland that sell pregnancy tests also sell other types of pregnancy and fertility items so you can get everything you need in one place, without having to leave home!
